**But in a major report last week, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies emphasized the importance of balance of nutrients, with carbohydrates — starches and sugars — making up 45 percent to and 65 percent of daily calories and fats, 20 percent to 35 percent. The panel of 21 scientists also urged Americans to keep as low as possible their consumption of saturated fats, the foods Dr. Atkins recommends as his diet's main components.**

jhp, the zone is 40/30/30. 40% C, 30% P and 30% F (the more monounsaturated the better - nuts, olive oil, guacamole, etc.)

i don't support atkins for many of the same reasons outlined in this report - in addition to the fact protein and fat gluttony just isn't reasonable.

imho, one ought to eat the correct amount of P, C and F and eat about that amount every day. no more, no less. that's the ideal that can never be reached. however, it can be approximated. 40/30/30 is a great place to start, imho.

of course, every change in diet ought to occur after discussing it with one's doctor.

it amazes me how everythiing has to be extreme. all this, none of that. doesn't a moderate diet in all facets make sense? it does to me.

i'm glad the institute of medicine *almost* approves of my diet. not quite, but almost! -lol-
