Re: "There are some practical tips that we can all do to help the environment. By the way reducing the consumption of meat would be good not only for our bodies but for the environment."

Many of William Least Heat Moon's observations about the upper Missouri River in the Dakotas and Montana focus on myriad problems associated with widespread cattle farming and federal policies protecting that polluting occupation. Native animal species, water quality and recreational tourism are all negatively impacted by widespread cattle farming, the author maintains.

On a few occasions in the book, Least Heat Moon laments the lack of wildlife he encountered in retracing the steps of Lewis and Clark from St. Louis up the largest river in North America, which, northwest of Nebraska, is now, to a large degree, a series of dammed (and damned) impoundments.

You're absolutely correct in saying there are practical steps we all can take to help the environment. However, many of the problems are beyond the scope of the average consumer, i.e., forest policy, cattle farming, hog farming, the widespread use of fertilizers and pesticides, river dams, etc.
