Yup. They begged him to compromise, and he has. And the compromise position is: War! But Diplomacy First! Let's see if they can keep to Henry K's suggested schedule of wasting about a month on the diplomatic decencies.

Bush lays out the time table. No mincing of words here. Trash talk - not!

reuters.com

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush made clear on Saturday he would act against Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein with or without world support, and was said to be ready to strike within four or five months.

...Following his talks with Bush, Berlusconi predicted action would be taken against Iraq early next year if Baghdad continued to bar U.N. weapons inspectors.

Berlusconi said he had told Bush that Saddam was "a pragmatic man" who, rather than risk a U.S. attack, would give in to demands that arms inspectors return to Baghdad.

"However, if I should be proved wrong tomorrow and Iraq does not comply with the U.N. ... then I think one can think in terms of (action) in January or February," Berlusconi said.

Although officials continue to insist that no decision has been made on whether to go ahead, they admit that contingency plans are in place.

The Ministry of Defence has set up a Target Planning Group to select targets for attacks by US and RAF aircraft on the no-fly zones in Iraq.

Senior defence sources confirmed that Tornado GR4s patrolling the zones would be equipped with precision-guided Storm Shadow missiles to provide "more punch".

...British and US special forces are already on the ground in the region and US air force engineers have already relaid three large air bases.
