Contaminated clothing or bed linens can also spread the virus.

Smallpox isn't like AIDS, where you need sexual contact or contact with contaminated blood. It's extraordinarily contageous.

In America, people would come across Indian villages where almost everyone in the village had died, almost all of them falling where they stood when they became infected, along pathways and around fires.

American Indians would react to smallpox like people react today to Ebola. They would bleed out from their eyes, ears, noses, and other orifices.
