Maybe this will help....From Marxist.com.....The last sentence of this long foreign policy from Marxist eyes article will sound familiar....

Foreign policy is an extension of domestic policy, and the attacks on the workers of the world are just an extension of the attacks on the American working class. The fight against imperialism abroad starts right here with the working class who have no interest in oppressing the workers of any other nation. As Marx explained, the "workers have no country". Building up the forces of genuine Marxism with roots in the labor movement is the only way forward for the workers of the US and the world.

Would it be fair to say that many on the left remain sympathetic to the goals of Marxism?

I am not sure that left criticism of the US is a consequence of sympathy for the goals of Marxism, or any other rational or even pseudo-rational process. Leftists, for the most part, criticize the US for the same reason that moths fly to light. It's what they do. There is no "why".

After some observation of leftists, I can only conclude that many of them no longer have any coherent goal: they identify themselves solely by what they oppose.

IMO, at least.

I think Steven was closer - the current crop are just aping the tired old refrains of the past, and opposing for the sake of opposing, without any concrete purpose.
