" I have to disagree with this line of logic Patricia (and Lindy)... Saddam is not trying to obtain nukes to unilaterally use them against Israel. He wants them to bolster his regime as well as to be able to present himself as the new power broker in the middle east. With nukes in his possession, he effectively obtains a new lease on his political life and will be able to overcome the "box" in which he currently finds himself (no one will risk a nuclear holocaust to overthrow him).. The Mid-East will then soon resemble the current stand-off between India and Pakistan and every Arab nation will be required to align with him. The next step would be creating his long sought after Arab "unification". But of course, the US can't be seen as publicly opposing such a unification in principle.. So we package it along the lines that Saddam might initiate a nuclear exchange.. For a comparison, imagine how WWII would have ended had Hitler obtained and used nuclear weapons in 1944, placing them on his V-2 rockets.. There would have been an immediate armistice and the cold war would have been fought against Nazism, and not Communism. (he definitely would have nuked the Russians). That, imo, is why it's so crucial to prevent Saddam from obtaining nukes. Hawk
