Back home. Got back yesterday afternoon. Don't know whether it was as beautiful as you remembered but it was as beautiful as we hoped, and then some.

Thanks for the recommendations.

The Acadia National Park was the high point, by far, of the trip. We'll definitely be going back there. We managed to stay one night just north of Camden in Lincolnville, then drove to Acadia the next day, spent about 5 hours driving the tour and got only half way round. We had to get out of the car and explore at every stop, listen carefully to the cd tour guide, etc. Only to find that if we continued at our leisurely speed we would not get back to Lincolnville until after midnight.

So, next time, and that will be, hopefully, as early as next spring, we plan to try to find a rental near Bar Harbor (we met some folk who had found such, an A frame, near Frenchman's Bay, for a not terribly expensive amount since it was out of season), and then spend several days at Acadia, sailing around the bays and inlets, and, perhaps, taking a ferry up to Novia Scotia.

We stayed in southern Maine first night out, Ogunquit, which was okay; then drove to Freeport to do the mandated purchase bit at LLBean's (nice store) and at the Dansk outlet across the street, and finally on to Boothbay Harbor for the night. Next day we drove on to Camden and Lincolnville.

We were actually surprised how close the Maine coast is. It was slightly over 4 1/2 hours from our house to Ogunquit and that included a nostalgic, slow drive up the Merritt Parkway (that was my commute for a couple of years in the 70s from Mt. Vernon to New Haven). And we drove back in less than 7 hours from the Camden region and that includes about 70 or 80 miles on Rte 1 before you get to 95.

Nice trip. And, again, thanks for the advice.
