What makes you think that Bernard Lewis hasn't read Gilles Kepel's books?

Oh, I have no serious idea. My guess is that he has. The line was meant to say, in subtle ways (g), that Lewis needs a dose of Kepel's framework (political Islam) and to do his homework on the varieties of Islamist movements. Kepel's stuff is amazing. And not comforting, though he argues the movement has been in decline through the 90s and the decline best explains 9-11.
