Vitebsk's sewers flowing with gold

In their search for riches, the people of Vitebsk have gone into the town’s sewers. They have been searching for non-ferrous and rare metals supposedly deposited there, and breaking sewage pipes of apartment buildings in the process.

"There was a rumour that Monolit Enterprise had dumped inferior condensers containing precious metals into the sewage system. Thus, these people are looking for them in sewage pipes in the enterprise zone and basements of nearby apartment houses," head of the 16th housing and public utility office Anatoly Kulagin said.

The ''gold diggers'' have destroyed about 40 metres of piping in four buildings, which will take an estimated one million rubles to repair. The police have detained three schoolchildren, but Kulagin fears that gold fever may spread throughout the neighborhood.

The town’s inhabitants are obviously firm believers in the old proverb: Where there’s muck, there’s brass. Last year, rubbish dumps and terrain adjoining the enterprise had to be covered over following a similar rumour that Monolit had disposed of other inferior products containing precious metals.
