It could have happened when the marine unit got wet. Sometimes equipment that gets wet will not longer work properly. Marines were often immersed in water and corrosion may have set in. It is possible they got overwound too. Back then most units were self-winding and with excessive movement their drive mechanisms got too tense and ran fast. After a while on a desk the units began to synchronize more readily with standard.
