It is a franchise, with different versions in various metropolitan areas. Three high schools compete, with three players on each team, ostensibly with varying strengths, and there are various rounds, including one that involves speed at the buzzer. Those schools that compete well go on to semi- finals and finals. My team my sophomore year got to the semi- finals, and were winning, but lost on the buzzer round. Apparently, the team that beat us had been trained to buzz automatically, without thinking first. The next year, I was the captain of the team, but was chosen at the last minute, and had no time to insist upon practice. We met the team that had beaten us earlier, and got beaten on the buzzer round again. Ironically, we now live near the high school that beat my team, and it probably would have been my high school had I lived with my father, who lived in this area for a number of years.
