SR,

I see your point, but think the anaolgy is wrong. Mormons and Catholics are well organized - Baptists are not. But then I have to admit I am catholic and am viewing the Baptists from the outside :-)

It's simply an observation made on the capacity of religious leaders to exploit the poor.

The reason some religious leaders are able to exploit their followers is because of the extraordinary good that most religious leaders do. This leads people to naively assume that all religious leaders are good. It's like a "halo effect."

I gather that you don't go to church, and don't see much use in your life for religious services and the counseling and encouragement that religious leaders provide.

I am from the Deep South, but Catholic, not Baptist. When I drive through a small town and see the prominence that the community gives to its church, what I see is the pride that the congregation takes in this central meeting place. I see the pride carriage and respectful bearing of men, women and children as they walk to and from their churches. I see how they are immaculately clean and dressed in their finest. I see them after church, gathering together to enjoy each other's company.

Not just black, white, as well. Some churches have integrated congregations, but it's not the norm. Black churchs have better choirs, and the women dress better.

I know that growing up in a small Southern community, the church can crimp the style of the young ones that want to live like they do in the big cities, smoking dope and having casual sex, but I don't see that as a bad thing.
