I instinctively know there is another undercurrent of truth running behind the "simpled down " version designed to hook the approval of the common man.

More than one "undercurrent"...

Actually, for some people, it's sufficient enough evidence for war by merely mentioning Saddam is brutalizing his own people, or that he has used chemical weapons in the past.

For some it's sufficient that he has thumbed his nose at the UN and US for 12 years now...

For some it's sufficient that he constantly threatens to destroy Israel.

For some it's suffficient that he sits on the 2nd largest global reserves of oil...

For some it's sufficient.... (need I go on??)

Many arguments ring rather hollow (and cynical) with regard to Iraq... But underneath the rhetorical "icing", there lies the true "cake" we each need to identify for ourselves.

The bottom line, imo, is that we have to cut through the BS and figure out what the underlying strategic trends are, and the repercussions for ignoring them...

I look at demographics (because they are hardest to ignore and have the greatest impact) and all of the subsequent influences that derive from a baby boom... That mass of young manpower has some expectations for their futures.. jobs, marriage... and failing that... Jihad.

And the last thing I want is for Saddam Hussein to be in a position to warp their minds into following him. And that's EXACTLY where he'll be should he obtain the safety and security of a nuclear shield.
