I think that the real danger we are facing in the war on terror lies in being unsophisticated and unsympathetic toward the political aspirations of people who are really struggling in countries that have shut down democratic outlets

The problem there is the people who are "struggling" (ie: "Jihad") in these countries have no interest in seeing a Democratic Government installed. They want a purified Religious state. The Koran says that there should be no separation between Church and State. To do otherwise is against the Koran, and that is the basis for the whole "Islamist" movement.

In all my readings on the ME, I find no evidence of a struggle to install, or desire for, a Democratic form of Government. The closest you will get is the "National Socialism" of the Baathist movement, but it always ends up in a Dictatorship.

Not a pleasant picture.
