This story or a version of it was brought to my attention in a PM. Silver is not magnetic. I have difficulty believing the story is accurate for two reasons. One is within the US, all precious metal jewelry is required to be properly stamped regarding its content and also to be stamped by the manufacturer's trademark so the source may be found in the event of any errors. Secondly, there is a huge difference int he desity of stainless steel compared to sterling silver. This would be quite obvious just by the feel. My gues without much research is we are seeing a sort of hoax.
