Is that what troubles you, you might claim that Stalin was worse than Hitler and you couldn't handle the thought?

Hardly. I don't have an interest in the question at all.

I recall that Iran's ruling government despised the US because we put the Shah into power and supported him throughout his regime.

I do have a different take on the Shah than you. I would agree he was a brutal authoritarian leader. Also remarkably arrogant. But I think the fundamentalist outrage of him was related more to his association with the west than his cruelty to his domestic enemies. Let's face it - those crowds chanting "Death to America" and screaming that we were the "Great Satan" are evidence that it was more true that he was hated because of his ties to us rather than us being hated because of our support of him. I recall his secret police agency was continued under the same management by the revolutionary regime which replaced him.

It might have been warmer if we hadn't tried to throw Castro out of power immediately after we overthrew Batista, and put Castro into power.

I doubt it. I think he was a committed Marxist from the beginning. Indeed he may be the last Communist leader left who actually believes in Communism.

I also see no logical reason to continue the Cuban boycott now that it has no powerful enemy of ours to ally itself with. Well, except the political reason. Both parties hope to carry Florida. So the boycott will have to stay till Castro dies.

There is a great essay by Charles Krauthammer in the back of the 9/23 Time magazine entitled Dictatorships and Double Standards. Couldn't find it on the Time site online or I would have posted it. If I find it in the future, I will post it.

In reference to the alliance with Stalin during WWII, the article says ... Does anyone doubt not just the necessity but the morality of that alliance? It is the principle of the lesser evil. As Churchill once famously said, "If I were told that the devil were on poorer terms with Hitler, I should find myself making an alliance with hell."

I'd like to quote the last paragraph of the essay as well.

Roosevelt was a grownup. He made choices. He slew his dragons one at a time. He understood that we do not live in the best of all possible worlds. He understood that in an international arena populated by sons of bitches, you make your distinctions, or you die.
