Negotiation in preference to annihilation is not so bad a deal, frankly. Negotiation only becomes serious when at least one side understands the limits of its position. Thus, for example, the Palestinians had to understand that they were not getting anything extra by suicide bombing, and that, in fact, they were going to lose ground, before there was a serious effort to stop the practice. Similarly with Iraq: the sooner they realize that they have to give up aspirations to regional hegemony, or become toast, the better.......
