Good article.

I think America is guilty of intereference in the world. Can intrusion ever be justified? I think it can. Self interest justifies everything. Self interest surmounts all rights and values.

Self defence is a funny thing. In law much attention is paid to immediacy and proximity. In philosophy it is different. Civilized society has a duty to defend itself against danger. I respect my neighbour's right to property, but if he hates my guts and starts to build a weapon I am going to engage a pre-emptive defence.

Western society is ignorant of the nature of the Arab world. I have a friend whose son was executed in Iran. My friend used to work in one of the American factories there before the "Holy men" reduced the country to primitive mindlessness. He escaped to Turkey (a military state which prevents the "Holy men" from consolidating and getting power). Without Israeli and American influence the Turkish military state would not be there.

So, in short...I think there is a difference as to what is ethical in the treatment of alien powers. There is a different ethic in dealing with the civilized than there is in dealing with the brutish. In the end it is up to those who predominate in power to decide what is ethical under the circumstances. This is the way it has always been...
