WashPost slams Schroeder for (gasp!) unilateralism!

The WSJ is at it, too:

German Stance on Iraq Isolates Nation From Its Postwar Allies
By IAN JOHNSON, Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

My personal interpretation of Schröder's stance is that he tries to push the PDS, the successor of the former communist party of East Germany, below 5%. The PDS traditionally appeals to pacifist minds. If they get beyond the 5% threshold an ugly draw between CDU/FDP and SPD/Greens might be the election result. No other chancellor candidate distanced himself as much from the USA as Schröder, not even during elections, and many people criticize it, including voices from within the SPD. Well, best to put Schröder on ignore until Sep. 23. It looked like a certain win for Stoiber until recently but currently nobody knows.
