Yeah, but that wasn't GST's position. He said saying we don't need it was a policy failure and the only reason we may get the stamp now is because we've backed down and changed our policy.

I, OTOH, have said all along that the objective was to get the UN and Congress on board with the "or else" part and that the hard line was a necessary posture to get the UN off its duff and to get Iraq to take UN demands seriously. Since Bush's speech last week, the UN is off its duff and Iraq is scrambling to appease the UN. What remains to be seen now is whether Iraq will actually follow through on its latest promises. Now is not the time for Bush to turn down the heat. Iraq has made these kinds of promises before and they always turned out to be hollow ones.

BTW, Iraq's offer may not end up being for free and unfettered access for inspectors. Reports this morning said they are to be restricted to military facilities and that the team will be restricted as to what intelligence information they can receive while they are there.
