Hi CobaltBlue; Re: "Hi Carl - in order to convince me that the Fast Sealift vessels are mothballed at this very moment, you'd have to find an eyewitness account from someone who has actually seen them in drydock or whatever it is they are in, within the past week or so."

Ooooooooh, you're a tough cookie, counselor! These ships are essentially in the reserves. I guess you think that they were clandestinely activated and the newspapers somehow failed to catch on. Nor is their any mention in the shipping news. The funny thing about this is that I, find myself trying to prove to a lawyer that the US isn't secretly organizing what would be an illegal invasion of a foreign country, but I'm the one who has to come up with "an eyewitness account" proving otherwise. (Which I have no doubt you would reject.) It's obviously black helicopter time. So you don't trust the "cargo preference" figures from the US government? The fascinating part of all this is that despite the "secret agent" nature of all the operation, you're nevertheless in favor of it.

No, I'm sure I can't convince you, but I can damn well come back 3 months from now and prove to you that the Ro-Ros weren't in use now. Which makes you just as wrong, but with a bit of a delay.

Re: "Tell them you're a taxpayer, that should make them cooperative.;^)"

Nah, I think that would attract the attention of the FBI.

But what are the Roll-on / Roll-offs doing? What they're usually doing. Sitting around doing nothing not much of anything, but spending your money, and being ready for a war if one ever breaks out:

The BoB Hope [Roll-on / Roll-off]:
Bob Hope gets misty, cleaned in Charleston
msc.navy.mil

The Cape Intrepid:
Seahawk ’02 takes off in Washington
msc.navy.mil

So you doubt the veracity of the above? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! LOL!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Here's the report to Congress as of June 2002:
marad.dot.gov

The fact is that in order to activate a Sealift ship, the government has to do a lot of stuff, and they don't keep it secret. Nor is there any reason to keep it secret. The ships are huge, they move between very standard ports. They're simply not secretive little things. What they do have is very few people on board when they're not activated, so they don't generate a lot of news. I'll link in a list of the Sealift fleet and what their status is in a minute.

Unless its clandestine/undisclosed ops, one could try Lloyds Register. Dont have a web site, sorry.

My dad was in the shipping business for many years, and thats how I recollect...
