Not exactly the same thing as propping up Somoza in Nicaragua, or the Shah of Iran, though. We don't seem to do that like we used to, though.

Why should we? We don't have to anymore in the absence of a great power contest. Where we DO support dictators, as you mentioned, is places like Pakistan where it is in our national interest to deal with the guy on the ground because he keeps a lid on things, is willing to work with us, and we need to get in, over, through, under, whatever his/her country NOW. Just like during the Cold War, its a marriage of convenience. It's a bit insulting to have someone insinuate that we do so because we're in love with tyrants and tinpot dictators.
