Re: Linux is not a mortal threat

Go buy a copy of Red Hat 7.3, see what it's like to install it and its equivalent of Office on your computer.

Then Realize that a very nice multimedia / productivity system with RedHat/StarOffice can be had for $650 while the identical system with nearly identical functionality with Microsoft XP and Office will cost you over $1,000.

The RedHat system includes all the functionality of Windows, Office, and things like AOL instant messenger. It records CD's and plays DVD movies. RedHat's Up2Date is just as easy to use as Microsoft's Windows Update for system maintenance and security patch installation.

It just costs a whole lot less and doesn't have the scary licensing issues associated with Windows XP (you agree to give Microsoft access to you your machine, and you agree to pay to have Microsoft audit you business's use of software at your expense).

Windows is a great product and has more momentum behind it than anything else, period. But PC's are getting to be appliances, and Window's huge cost disadvantage and disconcerting license will be real issues going forward.
