No fan either, but Chretien called it like it is, first on CBC on Sept. 11 and then in front of the UN. Joe Clark backed him up and Alliance, as usual, ended up blowing smoke. Anyone who has travelled into some of the sh*t-holes of the world knows the poor in the third world have nothing to lose by getting more aggressive. We had better get our collective western heads out of our assets and start helping out in some meaningful ways, or we will surely suffer the consequences...

What Chretien said:

"There are long-term consequences if you don't look hard at the reality in 10 or 20 or 30 years from now. And I do think that the western world is getting too rich in relation to the poor world,".

"And necessarily, we're looked upon as being arrogant, self-satisfied, greedy and with no limits. And the 11th of September is an occasion for me to realize it even more."

To be on the record about what I meant by >>he expressed his opinion as CDN PM) and it felt good<< I had his recent distancing from hawkish ideas regarding Iraq on my mind. I felt like (official) Canada were not as close to (official) US as (official again) UK seems to be.

What's the non-official man-in-the-street pulse on Iraq issue these times?

He's talking about being proactive to avert irrational attacks.

Maybe so, but what to do?

Everybody wants something, they all want things to go their way. The Palestinians want to kick the Jews out of Israel. Saddam wants to take over Kuwait and Iran. Bin Laden wants to take over Saudi Arabia. China wants to take over Taiwan. North Korea wants South Korea. The Taliban wants Afghanistan.

Canada wants to dump softwood, New Zealand wants to dump lamb, and everybody wants to dump steel, but nobody wants to buy GM corn, and everybody wants us to sign onto Kyoto.

All we have to do is let everybody have exactly what they want and nobody will get hurt.
