It worked fine in September 2001, February and July.

thanks Gersh - however, of the nine dates Paul lists in his post, seven are 2001-2002, so I see this as an indicator working well in this down-cycle. I'm short via Rydex leveraged funds right now, but watching very carefully for the signal to get long for the an up-cycle.

BTW Gersh, I see you are in USPIX. I'm beginning to get some queasy feelings about using these leveraged funds, since they have a large amount of counterparty credit exposure (as I'm told). With the JPM ratings downgrade, I'm wondering if they have exposure. I'm going to contact Rydex today and try to get some info on this. Have you thought about this issue?
