You don't know any compulsive people apparently. They DO in fact rationalize their compulsions and this delays their treatment. For hand washers, there really ARE germs and disease everywhere. It isn't that their fear is baseless, it is that the effort they spend to fight it off is disproportionate relative to the ACTUAL risk. [Edit: this is of course, the external opinion of others, and not theirs.]
