I agree that we have to hold out hope, and create reasonable rehabilitative opportunities to prisoners. Jail should be harsh enough to convey the seriousness of the offense, but not so harsh that it is a soul- killer. But there will be no improvement without motivation, and the desire to get out of jail and not return is the necessary to the process.

As far as the death penalty goes, I have argued that it is necessary to preserve a sense of the severity of justice, but should be limited to premeditated homicide with aggravating circumstances. I understand the concern about inconsistency and privilege, but I think the death penalty has to be available for the worst offences.

Under ordinary circumstances, we should not be bombing civilian populations. Now, there may be some collateral damage bombing legitimate military targets, but the idea is to undermine the ability of the regime to hold power, not torture its subjects........
