Gee, that is part of the flat tax idea......which has been introduced, in the past, by Republicans in Congress.......

believe several of the Republicans proposed a flat tax with $ 34,000 exemption. it got nowhere. it would eliminate the negative income tax bracket (i.e., where some people get more in tax rebates than they pay in taxes) that the Democrats wouldn't go for. it would effectively eliminate the IRA, 401K, and mortgage deductions that Republicans want since higher standard deductions or exemptions make them non-deductions for most people.
