Well, knock me over with a feather. Got this unsolicited email from a list of vintage bike enthusiasts who also do a good bit of dirt biking. And they say price doesn't matter. Anyway, too little, too late - but at the right price I think they could have loaded the system in short order. FWIW, this email was broadcast on a list by someone I've never met - just thought it interesting that "sat phones" are recognized, at least by this guy, as a good idea.

Subject: Satellite Phones

I don't know how many of you would be interested in this, but as many of us find ourselves miles from cellular phone coverage, a LOT OF THE TIME...

Globalstar has reduced the price of their Qualcomm 1600 satellite phones down to $599 (new). The basic service runs $25/mo. If you are not familiar with satellite phones, you can use them ANYWHERE.

The local store (for anyone who might be interested) is Custom Marine Electronics (619) 244-3646. They're located on Shelter Island.

We're thinking about it.
