Britain buys electricity from France because it produces it economically. Scotland has two nukes that produce 50% of the electricity demand, the rest is hydro electric.
The are big plans afoot to used wind, wave, and tidal power too.

England has a large percentage of fossil fuel power stations and produce 1000's of tons of sulphur dioxide and other pollutants. I believe there is technology available to remove it. It's high time it was used.

I lived in Ca for a while and impressed with the advanced pollution control at gas stations and vehicle emissions. Europe has lots of catching up to do.
