All fair points, though I think you underestimate the ability of people to dissemble on line.

There were several specific cases mentioned here a while back. I'm not good at remembering names, but there have been several young people who have successfully passed themselves off as qualified, experienced brokers or investors, in several cases defrauding people of quite a fair chunk of money. And there is the case of A@P here on SI, which is in the Courts, but where clearly there was some disparity between the presented persona (or personality, if you still object to the use of persona here) and the 3D person.

It's interesting that you find it easier to assess people on SI. I personally find it harder. Well, maybe that's the wrong term. If I really paid attention I might find it easier. But I pay a lot more attention to people I deal with in "real" life than with aliases here. I tend not to pay as much attention here to nuance, character, etc. as I do in the 3D world, because these are "people" I will never interact with in any other venue, who I can shut out of my life any time I choose to, and who don't impact me as real people any more than the authors of books do.
