ot/Wayne. Lotta heavy stuff

went down in those wars. Edward I (Longshanks) sure became one nasty dude in the later part of his reign.

But...believe it or not, those wars were a tea party compared to the time of The Hundred Years War which coincided with repeated waves of the Black Death after 1340, PLUS the death and chaos spread across Europe by the "Free Companies" between war campaigns.

By the end of the 100 yrs war? Europe was depopulated by a staggering 40%!!! European population didn't recovered to equal it's pre-war/plague level until after 1500!

Would probably take a nuclear war to reduce the population of entire continent to that extent today.

Our time has been so easy, by comparison to almost anything covered in either book that we're hot house flowers by comparison.

Early in the summer stumbled across 1978 1st ed hardcover (in mint condition) of Desmond Seward's excellent book: The Hundred Years War. For my money? It blows any adventure fiction I've ever seen. A stunning read.

Incredibly harsh and brutal times. However, the historian in me says it's better not to apply our standards to earlier periods. Instead try to put ourselves in their shoes. Then you have about as close to a time machine ride as any of us will ever get. Talk about providing a unique perspective when you then take a look at todays big picture global trends & news?! Has sure helped me a bunch over the years.

Well, I'd better get back to work before I get carried away.<g>
