(OT) Most people use North Sea gas which is ultra cheap, even with VAT on it, for heating and cooking purposes. I want to by a gas powered clothes dryer too because that would save a lot of electricity. Of course it is normal here to dry clothes on a line too, but the weather does not always help.

You are referring to "night storage heaters". The number of power stations needed is related to peak demand. At other times the generators work at lower power as the electricity is not needed. To make better use of demand there are special meters that only work at night. The electricity is cheaper. They heat up bricks that store the heat for up to 24 hrs. When you switch them on, you have to wait till the next day before they are working.
