the U.S. started many of those fires itself.

Just can't stand for the US not to be blamed for something.

Well, there was a war going on, so could some wells have been hit accidentally? Not impossible one thinks. OTOH, American bombardment during the war was aimed at Iraqi troops and installations for obvious practical reasons. Is it likely Iraqi troops dug in on top of oil wells? Well, their military leaders may not have been great but I suspect they weren't quite that stupid. All in all, its hard to believe that many Kuwait oil well fires were started by the US.
