The whole world stood up and told the US not to take any action that is not sanctioned by the Security Council -- this after a year of Cheney, saying he speaks for the President, travelling the world and visiting foreign leaders to preach his policy of an Iraqi invasion even if total disarmament of Iraq is achieved. The US was stupid to take this line and would be stupid to do what it has said it would do -- which is to invade Iraq alone and unilaterally even if Iraq is inspected and disarmed. Is the US that stupid? If you believe Cheney -- the answer is yes.

I tend to think that Saddam would either flee or kill himself before much of a big "war" develops.

A war implies two sides fighting, and most of Saddam's troops will throw down their arms and give up like they did in Kuwait.

Saddam is not like bin laden. bin laden has or had a strong personality cult that makes many young muslims follow him. But Saddam has a negative personality cult, fear and terror. He is a secular dictator with no real religious or ideological attraction. He commands the country through terror and opression.

If we invade, once his troops sense that he can no longer reach them with terror, they'll surrendur, turn coat, and join the invasion.
