Qualcomm seeing strong chip demand

SAN DIEGO, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Wireless technology company Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - News) on Thursday said it was seeing strong demand, particularly for its advanced phone chips, and said it expected to ship about 20 million chips in its fiscal fourth quarter.
The San Diego-based company also said it expected chip shipments to be significantly higher than 20 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2003.

The company shipped a little more than 16 million chips in its fiscal third quarter.

Shares of Qualcomm was off 27 cents at $25.72 in afternoon Nasdaq trading.
