You ask all the right questions, of course, and if we do topple Saddam it's just the first inning.

Like you, I have lived the bulk of my life in less than first world countries. In fact, most of my time has been spent in places that were wretched 40 years ago and remain wretched today.

Still, a fresh opportunity seems to be in the works.. History is not on our side in helping to mould nations that will abide by the rule of law, attack corruption, spend less on arms and more on basic needs and, at the least, have benign rulers who give their populations something of a say in their lives.

There has to be something of payoff for us in the Iraq of the future. Maybe it's oil concessions and basing rights. As for installing "democracy," I think it's time we got over the idea that we can impose anything resembling democracy in Iraq. If it is to come, it must be accomplished by the Iraqis themselves. A "puppet" leadership would be the fastest way to turn the Iraqis against us.
