Interesting snippet from a trade email rag I receive:

Civilian Capital is essentially a brokerage firm that is creating a market in
film investment to fill in the gap that is left by traditional financing
methods. In the past if you wanted to invest in the making of a film, you
would probably have to put up $100K. The average person would be shut out.
Civilian Capital is merging the field of finance with the field of film ---
effectively connecting Chicago to Hollywood. I believe that their founder,
Barry Poltermann, is from California. What they are doing is common already
in two countries, Germany and Korea. In Korea "Netizen" films raises hundreds
of thousands of dollars. Also, 20% to 25% of Hollywood films are currently
financed by German investors purchasing shares in "Medienfonds." Civilian
Capital has raised $1MM over the last couple of years and, additionaly, the
founders have contributed $400K of their own money . They would like to
become a Datek for the trading of film stock and options.

They also mentioned that in addition to financing films through private
placements, some movies are traded as derivatives. For example, "Harry
Potter" and "Spider Man." This is not what Civilian Capital is doing. The
derivatives trading is more like placing bets, along the lines of "I bet that
the movie will gross $140MM in its first weekend."
