no matter what we do
Throughout history empires have fallen because the nature of their power structure emboldens the enemies while leading to domestic corruption. The only ruling form that has not shown itself to fail is a democratic institution with strong checks and balances. Considering the devastation that can be caused by nuclear devices, geneticly modified organisms, or industrial scale smart/nano weapons, it would seem that our prospects for survival and that of our grandchildren are not good if we opt for a king of the hill on steroids model of international relations. International checks and balances are the only sane choice.
