Heatsinker2 Re:K8 launch delay

IIRC Barton is going to be bulk, NOT SOI.

heatsinker2: One of the mysteries for me is the fab for Barton. &#133 I just can't imagine a new fab starting up with an unproven SOI process. AMD wouldn't do that, would they?

Why not? AMD seems to like starting a new, unproven core on a new, unproven process. SOI and Hammer, .18µm and K7 (well, at least there were some .25µm K7s).

IMHO, Intel takes a much more reasonable approach. At least these past couple of transitions, they have ramped their old core on their new process (and typically sold it as a mobile product, to maximize ASPs).

AMD did claim to have produced some .18µm Cu K6s, but only in very limited amounts. Spewing out a ton of them for mobiles would have made much more sense IMO.

I sincerely hope that AMD have decided to also manufacture Barton's at their Dresden fab, but their history is certainly no indicator that they will&#133

Thank you for your inquiry regarding AMD's Hammer-family roadmap.

We are updating our guidance for the upcoming desktop AMD Athlon processor based on Hammer technology. It is planned to ship for revenue in 1Q03. We expect system availability in late Q103 or early Q203.

The upcoming AMD Opteron(tm) processor is on track to be available in the 1H03 for the server and workstation markets. Our customers are showing tremendous enthusiasm for this product, and we have enterprise class partners like Red Hat and IBM (DB2) lining up to lend us their support. We've passed many milestones with the AMD Opteron processor, including demonstrating AMD's first-ever, four-way server. We're more convinced than ever that the AMD Opteron processor will provide best-in-class performance for global enterprises.

The upcoming mobile AMD Athlon processors based on Hammer technology are on track to be available in the middle of 2003.

AMD has a product portfolio that remains competitive throughout 2003 and beyond.

Regards,
