Chechen Terror Link

Wasn't that long ago that all of our news stories on this subject were about the "Plucky" Chechens fighting the "Nasty" Russkys.

US condemns 'poisoned' relations with Berlin

The US on Friday accused Germany of poisoning relations with Washington after several anti-American statements in the run-up to tomorrow's elections.

Condoleezza Rice, national security adviser to President George W. Bush, told the Financial Times in an interview that the administration was dismayed by recent German statements.

Ms Rice particularly condemned comments by Herta Daubler-Gmelin, the German justice minister, who was reported to have compared President Bush's policies towards Iraq with Adolf Hitler's political tactics.

Ms Rice also indicated that the White House was troubled by Chancellor Gerhard Schroder's criticism of its position against Iraq. "I would say it's not been a happy time with Germany," she said. "There have clearly been some things said that are way beyond the pale. The reported statements by the interior minister, even if half of what was reported was said, are simply unacceptable.

"How can you use the name Hitler and the name of the president of the US in the same sentence? Particularly how can a German, given the devotion of the US in the liberation of Germany from Hitler?"

"An atmosphere has been created in Germany that is in that sense poisoned."

Ms Daubler-Gmelin on Friday denied that she had indirectly compared Mr Bush with Hitler.

In Germany, the two final opinion polls showed a narrow lead for chancellor Gerhard Schröder's Social Democratic party over the opposition Christian Democrats.
