It is certainly a disease to which groups are prone, but it is not typical, I should think. The problem is that in certain circumstances, the chances for the most ruthless claque to dominate is very great. Thus, the French Revolution began moderately, and ended with the Jacobins sending each other to the guillotine; the Russian Revolution also began with moderate aspirations, and ended with a Bolshevik coup; and the Communists beat the Kuomintang handily at the end of WWII, driving them off the mainline to Taiwan. On the other hand, the American Revolution remained pretty level headed; the American government refrained from revenge in dealing with the Confederacy; and the Allies rebuilt Germany and Japan........
