Anybody with half a brain knows that a name is a name and a person is a person, and that the tail does not wag the dog. Whether ones calls their spouse "darlin", "Buttercup", or "Poopy"--the person remains the same. It is, of course, legitimate to question how different mediums enhance or inhibit the quality of communication. There are questions of comparison which may be fairly asked regarding the various media which may be used to communicate: bulletin boards such as SI, chat lines such as ICQ, letters, phone calls, television, etc--all allow people to express their ideas and feelings to different levels of accuracy. One of the greatest channels of communication is the disappearing art of letter writing. Some of our most intimate knowledge of the characters of many famous personages come from the voluminous letters written by or about them. The wealth of information contained in the endless letters of Abigail Adams comes to mind. Henry James, of course, and Jane Austen... Some would say that using a pen name makes the person writing disappear--POOF!! <gg>! But such an idea is really not very mature... It is, however, gratifying to see a concern for fair play between people (as expressed in that quote you used); still, such a concern sits rather awkwardly with subsequent dismissiveness...
