of course some personal truths, that are antithetical to other truths, are hard to live with. I think that was an unexamined point in the article Karen posted. If person A admits that truth is relative, but still says "But this is what I believe in my relative way." and person B says "You are going to Hell!" They aren't going to get along too well. That is just my opinion. For some people personal truth is all truth, and there is no other way to see things. While that can be understood by relativists, it cannot exactly be embraced, or respected (perhaps?).

No way.

My mantra throughout has been that this is a complex issue and that there's not just one legitimate master POV but that there are multiple sub-issues each with its own set of legitimate differences in perspective and that anyone who differs on some of them is not the enemy. What I have learned through this microcosm of life, this case study we call Beanies, is the extent to which understanding and tolerance are inimical to thought totalitarianism and how thought totalitarianism can infect a culture. Quite a trip.
