Put the subject at the center, hold the shutter release down half way to lock in the focus, and then compose the frame.

That's what I hoped I was doing, learned that from an AF SLR I have - but with that one, I can see whether it's working or not. In the 995/heron situation, I could only hope. One big plus for digital: no cost to taking 10, 15 or 100 shots in the hope one or two work, I'd hate to do that with film.
