I heard a story of a German elected official flying from Chicago to LA bitched about the length of the flight & couldn't even imagine people making that drive. If we had subsidized mass transit as in Europe, it might be if horse of a different color. As the empty spaces here in the US eclipse anything seen in Europe(often by a factor of 15 sometimes by even 70-100X)such a system would still be cost prohibitive.

In the last 10 -15 years miles between an open business in the west late at night might stretch to more than 120 miles on less traveled routes.
