OUTSTANDING POST. Very insightful. Well done.

reposting your summary...
And I claim that the US bears essentially no blame for the fundamental source of their anger towards us. They don't hate us because of our foreign policy. They don't ultimately hate us because of past mistakes. They don't hate what we do or what we have done. They hate what we are, and what we show them that they are not. They hate our accomplishments and our capabilities because we force them to see their own lack of accomplishments and their incompetence and impotence.

In the mean time, now that al Qaeda has broken the ice, there will be further terrorist attacks against us as long as this war continues. They may be made by al Qaeda itself, or they may be made by other groups who will spring up. We can't totally prevent that until we've removed the true cause of those attacks: Arab cultural failure. Nothing short of that will stop the attacks. They're part of the setbacks which always accompany any major war. We'll do our best to foil such attacks, but inevitably some will succeed.

And those who don't understand the true issues will inevitably point to such attacks as proof that our campaign is a failure, that by our aggressiveness we raised further terrorist groups against us, that we should abandon the war and try appeasement, concession, aid, humanistic solutions.

And they'll be wrong, because they don't understand the real reason why we're being attacked and therefore why such approaches won't truly remove the source of the grievance..

They won't stop hating us until they become successful and begin to achieve on their own. We can't make them successful with material gifts, including aid to their poor. We can only make them successful with cultural changes, and they will resist that. Now that we've been attacked, we are ourselves compelled to force them to accept those cultural changes, because that is the only way short of actual genocide to remove the danger to ourselves. This war will end when they change, but not before.

Wrong approach: "Cultural Genocide"

I am forthrightly proposing what some might call cultural genocide, for example, which instantly puts me on the Pomo/Tranzi blacklist. The existing Arab culture which is the source of this war is a total loss. It must be shattered, annihilated, leaving behind no more traces in the Arab lands than the Samurai left in Japan or the mounted knights left in Europe.

Hitler's actions towards Jews in WWII is more like "Cultural Genocide" than the Samurai or medieval Knights. Hitler proposed killing or enslaving Jews worldwide, starting with Germany.

You start by saying Islam is "deeply diseased", without taking into account peaceful Muslims that accomodate both Islam and peaceful existence with the US. That ignores any possibility of change, based on warlike Koranic verses.

You then take that supposition and decide that extermination "of their culture" is the only option.

"No amount of aid to the poor will help".
Forgetting, of course, the billions in military aid pumped into both sides in the Israeli/Arab conflict.

"The US is not at fault"
Convenient, but what if the US had not gotten involved in these thousand-year-old blood feuds?
Why do we need to be involved? Your answer is the adminstration DOD answer:"because they are jealous of our success, their failures, and want to save face". Certainly they are, but to motivate suicide bombers requires death and destruction as motivators. Not just the threat of "Baywatch" reruns.
The more thousands or tens of thousands of deaths are caused in the name of the US, the more recruits they'll have.
IMO, the American culture is powerful because it is not a military attack, for which there is only the military answer. The only solution for Islamists to prevent US culture is to promote US war.

As far as the accidental wealth of our Arab enemies, we have the solution to that as well: boycott Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
The Oil Administration and lobbyists will scream, but Americans can thrive with alternative sources, and will be willing to, given the choice.
