When I read these paeans to untrammeled executive power, now being written by the right, I can't help but be reminded of Al Hunt's column soon after 9-11. He was dealing with the question whether Gore's foreign policy team would have done a better job than Bush's. He worked his way through the relative qualifications of probable Gore cabinet members as compared to the Bush choices and, basically, came down to a draw. Then he wryly wrote, the right would not have given Gore nearly as much latitude as the left will do with Bush.

The right would not have written these paeans to unlimited executive power if Gore would president. Just absolutely, no doubt.
