Are you a geologist? It would take one to understand that. Holy smokes!

It sounds very reminiscent of a recent tv show on the evolution of man, in which a geo-chemist related the organic compounds in sedimentary rocks to vegetation that was prevalent in geological history. The gist of it was that the fossil record shows man as the single branch of the tree all the way back to when we split off from the apes. Except for neanderthals, the fossil record shows no other branches of the human species, making us unique in the animal kingdom. Extinction of the other branches, if such existed, is the only explanation for our uniqueness. This geochemist showed that nearly ubiquitous forest was followed by nearly ubiquitous grasslands across the earth, indicating a vast climate change. The transition appeared about the time mankind started to flourish, thus leading to his conclusion that the other human-like branches simply died out because of their inability to adapt to grasslands. The single line of humans that survived was just one of the branches that managed to survive. The others remained in the ape family, with the exception of a few who became democrats.

(I just threw that last in to get back on topic.)
