Neff, who turned 71 on Thursday, has invested half of his personal portfolio in fixed-income securities, principally tax-free municipal-bond funds managed by Vanguard, because, he chuckles, "I'm old."

The other half is highly concentrated in a handful of largely beaten-up names, including Citigroup and Tyco International, and the shares of homebuilding concerns. "We got hosed pretty good," says Neff, a master of colloquialism.
